2024-11-19 - This keyboard sucks

I have buyers remorse. Last year, I decided to splurge and go for a fully custom mechanical keyboard, one that I'd build myself. I got a MonsGeek M5 kit and then some chinese switches I found on /g/, the princess mmd, along with some random ABS black keycaps. The aesthetics didn't matter to me. Anyways, after getting this keyboard, only a few weeks in I was noticing keys double pressing or not pressing at all. This was annoying enough for me to order another set of switches (also chinese, big mistake) and they had the same issue after a few months. It's now late 2024, over a year since I originally got this, and I'm still dealing with double pressing or non-pressing. Why do I put myself through this, you ask? Well, probably the sunk cost fallacy. Overall, I've probably put at least $300 into this keyboard. The kit itself was $130, the keycaps another $30, and then both sets of switches together comes out to close to $150. That's a lot of money for a keyboard. I figured if it was long lasting and reliable it was worth the cost, and just for the fun aspect, but seems I was wrong. The worst part is that I don't actually know if this is a problem with the switches or the kit itself. It could easily be the switches, because both are chinese and I don't know how much I trust their technology. But both switches had the same problem, which points to the common factor being the kit itself. I'm considering just giving in and putting this on a shelf to collect dust while I buy another (cheap, prebuilt) keyboard, but it feels like such a waste to do so. As with most things for me, it's probably just a matter of waiting until it pisses me off enough to make me actually do something about it. The worst part is that I do type a lot, coding on the side at home being a hobby of mine. So this affects me greatly. But I haven't done anything about it. Annoying.
